The backlash over Battlefield V’s inclusion of women and non-white dudes is ridiculous. The gripe is that British women did not fight in the front lines. There are also other nit-picky couch-historian arguments about the inaccuracies of body art, weapons and prosthetics.
For a quick preview of our new characters, here’s the single player trailer:
Why exactly did developer EA DICE decide on a diverse cast of characters?
First of all, it’s more interesting that way. We have too many games where the main protagonist is a white dude. Not that there’s anything wrong with white dudes, but it’s a diverse world out there. And World War 2 was fought by everybody. Heroes came from all walks of life. It’s something different and unique.
Secondly, it’s good marketing. Any kind of controversy is good publicity.
Third, this game is not meant to be 100% historically accurate. Most games are not. Battlefield V isn’t a straight simulator or a historical record. A DICE is not a revisionist. It does not claim to be a historian. It’s a game company, and games are first and foremost games. Entertainment.
Finally, who cares? Sure, if aliens dropped out of the sky a thousand years from now and Battlefield V is the only thing they had to construct our lost civilization, then they might get the wrong idea about a few details. Yes, that’s right, they’re just small details that really no one cares about in the context here.
Some idiots want to look smart so they’ll point out how inaccurate something is in a video game. But I’m positive those idiots are not really that concerned about historical details. No, they just don’t want to see diversity. They’re bigots and racists upset that the star of the campaign doesn’t sound and look like them.
Ultimately, true gamers and EA DICE shouldn’t give a darn about these idiots. It’s sad that EA CCO, Patrick Söderlund, even had to make a statement about it:
“We stand up for the cause, because I think those people who don’t understand it, well, you have two choices: either accept it or don’t buy the game.”
This is a big win for EA, keep it up!
