Project Awakening Teaser Trailer — Dragon’s Cool but…is that all?

By | September 11, 2018

It’s hard to be wowed by cinematic teaser trailers anymore. To grab gamers’ attention, the trailer should show something new or have some real bite to it.

I don’t know how good Cygames’s new RPG, Project Awakening, will be. The Japanese developer’s team is top notch, but we don’t know much about it yet. But if we’re grading trailers, this one gets a C.

The trailer begins with our hero, a knight, advancing on the ruins, which has become a dragon’s den. A discarded helm is a sign of the danger ahead. Dudes have died here, it says. Or it could be, “Dudes have run away from here.” Who knows, but scary up ahead, better turn back. But of course, our hero continues on his heroic quest to destroy the dragon.

And the battle with the dragon? Epic, it is not.

Lots of pushing around and slapping each other. The hero’s sword doesn’t have much effect, which is not surprising but boring to watch. And there’s a lot of this repeating itself over and over again.

And then when you think the battle is over…it keeps going. Same thing.

Have to note the dragon is impressive to look at — sweet texturing.

Like all trailers, there’s a little surprise and mystery at the end. Here, after our battle, the blood causes a tree to crystallize. After that, there’s a dust and smoke, beyond which we see a huge dude’s shadow. He’s huge. A giant? A god? A demon?

I see what they’re going for, but nothing new.

Hopefully, the gameplay itself is much more interesting and not as repetitive.
