Final Fantasy VIII on Steam for $11.99, not bad for a 15 year-old game

Final Fantasy 8 is on Steam for $11.99.  How awesome is this game?  It was released 15 years ago, on the first Playstation, and it’s still going for $11.99.  That’s test of time.  Halo 4, last year’s mega-hit, won’t be going for $11.99 in 2027.

What other notable games came out in 1999?

Grand Theft Auto 2

Heroes of Might and Magic 3

SimCity 3000

Mario Party

EverQuest

Syphon Filter

Age of Empires 2

Medal of Honor

All good games, but nowhere in the same league as FF8.  It had the epic story, the soundtrack, the characters you develop a deep bond with, and oh yeah, it’s a really fun video game.  The main campaign, the side missions, even the in-game card game, Triple Triad, is awesome.  You get to drive a big floating school, ride trains, and then fly a spaceship.  The final battle is epic with a great payoff.  Even completing Squall’s gunblade is in itself an endeavor.  I don’t know how many hours I spent on one of those remote islands looking for that final component to finish it.

Then there’s the score.  There have been concerts of the music featuring big-time orchestras.  The song, “Eyes on Me,” won main-stream awards.  The cut scenes alone are worth replaying the entire game for.

There are also the quirky Asian-drama-like moments, which I love: the shy dude who can’t approach the girl he likes, awkward embarrassing moments, the guy with the diarrhea problem who likes porn, and of course, all the crazy hair.

A great game start to finish.
