How to get people to shut up without killing them

Life is good in GTAville

I want to be that guy.  The MAN at Rockstar, or at any company or government for that matter, who gets to say, “We made a mistake?  Let’s give everyone half a mil.  That’ll shut ‘em up.”  I don’t care if it’s GTA$ or L$ or PED.  It’s still pretty awesome.

That’s exactly the action Rockstar took when glitches caused Grand Theft Auto Online players to lose characters, endure the difficulties of server errors and all other tragedies.  A tornado of sorts to some players like this nut:

Reparations?

Reparations?

Anyway, the solution the MAN at Rockstar came up with was to give everyone $500K in two payouts of $250K so as to not jack up their in-game economy.  Actually, I would think pumping that much money would have a positive effect on the economy long-run.  Probably not bad for the real-life bottom line, too.  More money, more spending, more time spent online…keep adding to that billion in the bank.

Money is a great way to pacify the masses.  So is entertainment.  Romans had gladiatorial games.  Dictators of later years ramped up their country’s porn industry.  The dictator in South Korea started the Korean Baseball league to distract people away from his oppressive rule.  But what do you do when you are the entertainment?  When killing and stealing and oppression is part of the game?  More money to keep doing what they’re doing.

We can learn a lot from video games.
